Grocery chain Magnit starts introducing eye biometric payment

MOSCOW, Apr 22 (PRIME) -- Russian grocery chain Magnit in a partnership with Sberbank has started introducing eye biometric payment and plans to expand the technology among more than 100 points of sale in Moscow and Krasnodar by June, the retailer said on Thursday in a statement.

“The new way of payment with a look is available already in 10 stores in Moscow, Krasnodar, and Rostov-on-Don almost in all formats of the Magnit group outlets,” the seller said.

To use the technology, the buyer should be a Sberbank client and activate facial recognition in advance at a bank office or in mobile application Sberbank Online and indicate the card to pay with.

The method takes three seconds instead of 34 seconds for cash payment and 15 seconds for payment with a card.

Magnit will decide on scaling up the initiative after studying feedback from buyers and a potential impact on business indicators.
